Cinnamon 1.2 released
Cinnamon 1.2 is out!
All APIs and the desktop itself are now fully stable!
I hope you’ll enjoy the many new features, the desktop effect, desktop layouts, the new configuration tool, the applets, changes, bug fixes and improvements that went into this release. This is a huge step forward for Cinnamon.
We’ll follow up with documentation for artists and developers, and with a website for users to download, rate and comment themes, applets and extensions. For now, we hope you enjoy this new release as much as we enjoyed working on it. Some of the new features were requested by many people, others will come as a bit of a surprise. It’s a real pleasure for us to finally unveil the very latest of our favorite desktop and we look forward to receiving your feedback so we can improve Cinnamon further with each and every release.

Linux Mint 12 KDE RC released!
The team is proud to announce the release of Linux Mint 12 KDE RC.
KDE 4.7
This edition comes with the latest and recently released KDE 4.7.4
Hybrid ISO images
This is the first release of Linux Mint using Hybrid ISO images.
Traditionally, tools such as ‘Startup Disk Creator’ or ‘UNetbootin’ were needed to install Linux Mint via USB. With hybrid images, you can simply use the “dd” command or a graphical frontend to make a bootable USB stick with no efforts which acts exactly like a liveDVD.
Pros:
The resulting USB stick will act exactly like a liveCD/DVD
The process is fast and simple
Hybrid ISOs are still compatible with Unetbootin and Startup Disk Creator
Cons:
This method deletes all the data present on the USB drive
The USB stick isn’t persistent (though you can still use Unetbootin to do this)
For more information on how to install this release via USB, please read this tutorial.
Search engines
Duck Duck Go: The new default search engine is Duck Duck Go. It doesn’t show different results depending on who’s making the search, it doesn’t track or record user information, it provides you with optmized results and it’s built on and contributes to Open Source.
Development of a new business model: Search engines will share with Linux Mint the revenue generated for them by Linux Mint users. Some search engines partnered with Linux Mint already and are present in Linux Mint 12.
Easy installation of other engines: The way you install search engines in Linux Mint 12 is radically different than in previous releases. Clear explanations and easy instructions are there for the user to understand how search engines help Linux Mint and to decide what to do. The installation of additional search engines is also now much easier than before.
Upstream components
Linux Mint 12 features the following upstream components: Ubuntu 11.10, Linux 3.0, KDE 4.7.4.

Linux Mint signs a partnership with Blue Systems
Blue Systems is a German company sponsoring Free and Open Source projects such as Netrunner and KDE-projects like kcm-gtk-config.
As part of the partnership, Linux Mint will share its knowledge and expertise with Netrunner and both distributions will work together on improving their respective KDE editions. Although Netrunner and Linux Mint KDE offer a different experience, they’re built on the same technology. This cooperation between the two distributions will have positive effects on both.
Blue Systems is also becoming the primary sponsor for Linux Mint. This sponsorship allowed us to contract an additional full-time developer for the whole year of 2012.

Introducing Cinnamon
Introducing Cinnamon
With Gnome 2 no longer an option we lost one of the most important upstream components our Linux Mint desktop was based on. Our entire focus shifted from innovating on the desktop, to patching existing alternatives such as Gnome Shell. We used MATE and MGSE to provide an easier transition away from Gnome 2, but without being able to truly offer an alternative that was better than Gnome 2. Both MATE and Gnome Shell are promising projects but MATE’s ultimate goal is to replicate Gnome 2 using GTK+ and Gnome Shell doesn’t provide what we need in a desktop and is going in a direction we do not want to follow. So for these reasons we’re designing a new desktop called Cinnamon, which leverages new technology and implements our vision.

eUKhost provides Linux Mint with a new server
Our main sponsor, eUKhost, now provides Linux Mint with an additional dedicated server.
The server is located in Milton Keynes, UK, and features the following specifications:
E3-1230 Quad Core Intel Xeon CPU (SAS)
8 GB DDR3 RAM
2 x 300 GB SAS 15k rpm RAID 1
3000 GB bandwidth
This £189/month server is provided to Linux Mint for free as part of eUKhost’s sponsorship.
During the release of Linux Mint 12, the traffic on our website was so high we had to disable most of the modules from the community website. Everything is back online and the community website is now hosted on its own dedicated server.
I’d like to thank everyone for their patience during the downtime and of course our partner eUKhost for providing us with this new server.

Linux Mint 12 Preview
Vandaag heeft Clem een preview gegeven van Linux Mint 12 ( Lisa )
I would like to apologize to the community, the media, and the journalists who wrote to us to know more about our upcoming release. We’ve been extremely secretive and 3 weeks past the Ubuntu release it’s still unclear for most people exactly what the next Linux Mint will look like. The reason we’ve been so silent is because we didn’t want to promise something we could not guarantee. Today we’re finally ready to give you an in-depth preview of Linux Mint 12, codename “Lisa”. I hope you’ll enjoy it and I look forward to reading your feedback.
Gnome 2 vs new desktops
In Linux Mint 11 we made the decision to keep Gnome 2.32. The traditional Gnome desktop, although it’s not actively developed by the Gnome development team anymore, is still by far the most popular desktop within the Linux community. As other distributions adopted new desktops such as Unity and Gnome 3, many users felt alienated and consequently migrated to Linux Mint. We recorded a 40% increase in a single month and we’re now quickly catching up with Ubuntu for the number #1 spot within the Linux desktop market.
As much as we’d like to keep Gnome 2.32 a little while longer we need to look forward and embrace new technologies. This doesn’t mean we need to change the way people use their desktops, not at all, it means we need to try and do our best for people to feel at home again, but on top of a brand new base, a new layer of technology, one that is actively supported upstream and that can be maintained properly going forward.
